Why Shandong Jianzhu University

Shandong Jianzhu University is an engineering-based multidisciplinary university specialized in civil construction, also covering engineering, science, management, literature, arts, law and agriculture. The new campus is located in emerging east Jinan, the City of Spring with a time-honored cultural history and beautiful natural landscape, in Shandong province, adjacent to the East Jingshi Road in the south, the Century Avenue in the north, the Jinan Administration Approval Service Center and Jinan Olympic Sports Center, boasting its superior geographical location and convenient traffic.

History

Initially the Jinan Urban Construction Engineering College set up by the former Ministry of Urban Construction in 1956, it was upgraded to a university for undergraduate education in 1958. Then it was successively renamed Shandong Institute of Architecture and Shandong School of Architecture. In 1978, it was reborn as the Shandong Institute of Architecture and Civil Engineering. In 1982, it was listed among the earliest universities entitled to award bachelor's degree. In 1997, it passed the appraisal on undergraduate education by the former State Education Commission. In 1998, it was approved by the Committee of the State Council Academic Degrees to award master's degree. In 2006, it was renamed Shandong Jianzhu University as approved by the Ministry of Education. In 2007, it was appraised as an excellent university for undergraduate education by the Ministry of Education. In 2012, it succeeded in applying for the projects for cultivating talents with doctor's degree for special purposes in China and was approved to be one of the first well known universities for cultivating applied talents in Shandong province, signifying a new stage for its development.

Infrastructure

The university has two campuses with advanced and complete facilities, namely Heping Campus and New Campus. The latter was put into service in 2004. The two campuses cover a land area of more than 2500 mu, with a building area of over 700,000 m2. The library has a collection of 2,985,000 books, including over 1,865,000 printed books (20,000 in foreign languages) and 1,120,000 e-books (more than 20,000 in foreign languages). The university owns an area of 84,200 m2 for sports and instruments and equipment of RMB 205 million worth for teaching and research. It owns 5531 computers and 18500 seats in multimedia classrooms and language labs. Level

In active efforts to meet the needs of regional economic and social development, the university duly optimizes the mix of disciplines to schools and divisions including School of Civil Engineering, School of Management Engineering, School of Thermal Engineering, School of Municipal and Environmental Engineering, School of Arts, School of Architecture and Urban Planning, School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, School of Information and Electrical Engineering, School of Business, School of Materials Science and Engineering, School of Computer Science and Technology, Science School, School of Law and Political Science, School of Foreign Languages, School of Transportation Engineering, Continuing Education School, and Physical Education Division. The university offers 51 majors for undergraduates, 14 first-level master's degree programs, 52 second-level master's degree programs, six academic master's degree programs and 11 professional master's degree programs. It has a current enrollment of 24,000 full-time students from 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions.

Education and Teaching

The university considers teaching quality as the lifeblood for it to survive and develop. In implementing a quality-oriented strategy, the university focuses on fostering creativity, ability of practice and employment competiveness of students by renovating educational philosophy, deepening teaching reform, standardizing teaching management and establishing the core role of teaching. The university concentrates great efforts on cultivating graduates with excellent academic performance, strong adaptability, high capability and superior competency. Through great efforts in improving teaching, launch of a variety of teaching quality programs and application for national and provincial teaching programs, the university has attained remarkable achievements, including four national specialty disciplines, two national project practice education centers, one national experimental teaching demonstration center, three national top-quality courses, one national bilingual demonstration course, one national outstanding teacher with six civil engineering sub-disciplines passed the national professional appraisal.

The university attaches great importance to the development of the creativity and comprehensive quality of students. To this end, it has established an engineering-based teaching system integrating learning, practice and research. The university has also been active in building teaching practice base and encouraging research-based learning and innovative test program. In 2011, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to implement the Excellent Engineer Training Program (also known as the Excellence Program). In recent years, students have won more than 900 awards in various contests at and above provincial level, including the "Challenge Cup" and contests of electronic design, mathematical modeling, planning and design, art design. The university is listed among top universities in China for the number of declared and licensed patents, and rated as national excellent organizer of social practice of university students for 22 times. Its graduates are widely recognized with an employment rate of over 90% in the past five consecutive years, ranking top among the universities in Shandong Province. It was awarded the honor of National Outstanding Organizations for Cultivating Talents for Construction, Outstanding Organizations for Employment in Shandong Province and Model Universities for Employment-Oriented Innovative Education in Shandong Province. Since its founding, the university has provided more than 100,000 high-quality graduates to the society, most of whom have become the backbone in various industries and sectors in China, winning high reputation from the society for their high comprehensive quality, strong desire to do better, hardworking and innovative spirits, and excellent performance. Among the 36 engineering survey and design maters elected in Shandong Province, ten are gradates from the university.

Scientific Research

The university also pays much attention to discipline development, considering it a key to build the university's core competitiveness. By highlighting the advantage and feature of civil engineering and boosting the cross-development of conventional and emerging disciplines, the university continuously improves the mix of disciplines and the level of research and development and has developed a number of advantageous fields, such as civil engineering, urban planning and building design, intelligent buildings and building energy conservation. It has one key laboratory jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Shandong Province, three disciplines with professorship of Taishan Scholar, three provincial key laboratories, seven provincial engineering and technological research centers, one provincial intangible cultural heritage research base. In the review of key programs of Shandong province for the 12th Five-Year Plan, the university was recognized to have ten provincial key disciplines, four key laboratories in universities of Shandong and one provincial university humanity and social science research base, among which two were rated specialty disciplines and one laboratory recognized as a provincial key laboratory to receive stronger support. These signify breakthroughs in the development of disciplinary platform.

Always admitting the key role of scientific research in cultivating high-quality talents and enhancing the core competitiveness, the university keeps improving the management system, promoting the integration and optimization of resources, which greatly improves the innovation capacity and produces a number of significant high-level achievements and awards. In the past five years, it has undertaken more than 400 research programs at and above provincial level with funds totaling RMB 300 million. It has won more than 80 awards at and above provincial level, including one National Science and Technology Progress Second Prize, four Shandong Province Science and Technology Progress First Prizes. The university's teachers have published more than 7,000 papers, among which 635 are indexed by SCI, EI and ISTP, 540 monographs and textbooks, and won 180 national patents. The Journal of Shandong Jianzhu University is listed among the source journals for Chinese scientific and technical papers and citations.

Social Service

The university seeks support by offering services and contributions to social development. It proactively adapts to the needs of the development of regional economy, especially the capital construction, thoroughly implements the Action Plan for Making Contributions to the Construction of Shandong Province, makes due contributions to the construction of new socialist countryside, the development of Yellow River Delta Efficient Eco-Economic Zone, and the promotion of energy-efficient buildings in accordance with the Yellow River Delta Efficient Eco-Economic Zone Development Plan and Shandong Peninsula Blue Economic Zone Development Plan (also known as Yellow Strategy and Blue Strategy respectively). In addition, it built a Low-carbon and Green Urban Buildings Research Institute, providing technological support for the development of low-carbon economy in Shandong province. It has signed more than 40 strategic cooperation agreements with local governments, scientific research institutes and large enterprises, such as the government of Dongying Municipality, Shandong Academy of Sciences, and Linuo Group. It has put more than 400 research achievements into use, led and participated in the development of more than 30 national and provincial standards, set up a High-tech Industrial Park by integrating resources, built China's first student dormitory which consumes solar energy, completed China's first location rotation of building and relocation of an ancient building for protection, undertook the project management of more than 20 large-scale projects, such as University Science and Technology Park in Changqing District, Olympic Sports Center, and Garden Expo, participated in the planning and design of a wide range of projects, such as the Shandong Pavilion of the World Expo, the velodrome of China's 11th National Games, the China Football and Basketball Academy. It was awarded one of the Outstanding Universities for Cooperation with Enterprises in Shandong Province.

Talents

Adhering to the strategy of developing the university relying on talents, it invests greater efforts in training and introducing talents, optimizes the environment for cultivating talents, and continuously improves the structures of the teaching stuff's age, education background and academic origin. It has over 1300 full-time teachers among which 615 have senior professional titles, 286 are supervisors of master students, 25 are employed as part-time supervisors of doctorate candidates by prestigious universities, such as Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Tongji University. The university has three academicians shared with other universities, five members of New Century National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent Project, 16 winners of State Council Experts for Special Allowance, one national outstanding teacher, 13 national prominent teachers, 11 Distinguished Taishan Scholar Professors and Distinguished Overseas Taishan Scholar Experts, 15 young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions in Shandong, eight provincial outstanding teachers, 13 provincial prominent teachers. Devoted to the development of the university, all the faculties are making great contributions with their meticulous scholarship and virtue. In 2012, the energy-efficient building technological innovation team of the university was rated Shandong Province Outstanding Innovation Team and awarded Top-grade Merit Citation.

External Exchanges and Cooperation

With an open mind, the university strives to enhance communication with domestic and foreign peers and other sectors for a broader vision and higher management performance. It has established connections with more than 40 universities in 21 countries and regions, launched nine joint-education programs in nine fields, including civil engineering, architecture, business administration and international business, and more than ten student academic visit programs. More than 100 visiting scholars and students are working in the university. It has engaged more than ten foreign experts and teachers in long-term service in the university. The university aims to enhance the international cooperative research and academic exchanges, and has undertaken several international programs, held more than 20 international academic conferences, including International Sustainable Energy Technology Conference and International Workshop for Solar Energy and Buildings, and invited foreign experts for short-term lectures and academic activities, all of which have broadened the academic horizons of students and teachers. The university has established more than 180 joint postgraduate training bases and university students' internship and practice bases in more than one hundred enterprises and public institutions, such as Shandong Provincial Academy of Building Research and Qingjian Group Co., Ltd, offering 26 university-level rewards programs for students and teachers and creating favorable conditions for students.

To improve the material culture, the university plans and builds more than 30 cultural sites, including the statues of ancient sages and famous scholars, such as Confucius, Mencius, Mozi and Yanzi, a landscape belt featuring architectural culture, including the old villa built during the Republic of China, Xueshan House, Fenghuang Residence, Daiyue Dwelling, Xueshanzhishang Building (the home of alumni and board), Chengqi (a sculpture for the 10th anniversary of the new campus), and railway industry and construction demonstration base. All this enriches the cultural atmosphere.
